Derek Chauvin's Sentencing To Take Place On June 16

Derek Chauvin, the former cop responsible for the death of George Floyd, will be sentenced on June 16, 2021.

Recall that AllNews Nigeria earlier reported that Chauvin was found guilty of all charges in the murder case which sparked mass anti-racist protests across the globe.

The date for the sentencing was revealed by the Hennepin County District Court, stating that the former police officer will be sentenced on the aforementioned date at 1:30 pm (1830 GMT).

Chauvin kept his knee on the back of Floyd's neck for over nine minutes despite the latter's pleas that he couldn't breathe. The crime was recorded by a bystander and the clip shocked the entire world, prompting the ensuing trial of the former cop.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland had on Wednesday announced an investigation to ascertain if the Minneapolis Police Department systematically uses excessive force and "engages in a pattern or practice of unconstitutional or unlawful policing", including during legal protests.

Chauvin's recent conviction was cheered by many (including the Floyd family) who have sought closure since the tragic incident.
