Dr Olatoke Lukman, a Consultant Paediatrician and Endocrinologist at the Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe, has disclosed that many diabetes patients are not aware of their status, thereby calling for more awareness of the health condition
He spoke during a programme organised on Monday in commemoration of the 2022 World Diabetes Day by the Society for Paediatric and Adolescents Endocrinology of Nigeria in collaboration with the Department of Paediatric Federal Teaching hospital Gombe.
He stressed the need for parents to be educated on how to manage and care for children with the disease
He said diabetes mellitus affects all ages, including children who have a deficiency of insulin in their bodies, adding that a lot of them are unaware of their status.
The endocrinologist said, “Genetic, infection and early introduction of cow milk to children and psychological stress are some of the factors contributing to developing type one of the disease.”
He called on parents to visit the hospital for proper medical checks whenever they notice, “any of their wards frequently urinating and taking excess water, eating too much but losing weight and always tired, or having a blurred vision as the care and treatment for children with diabetes at FTH Gombe is free of charge.”
