Diesel Importers Now Selling Contaminated Products To Nigerians

Low quality and contaminated diesel are reportedly in circulation according to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). It was learnt that the product is being sold across the country at discounted prices to unsuspecting buyers.

The increase in circulation of the low grade is linked to the weak regulation as NNPC isn't the sole importer of diesel unlike the regulation of the premium motor spirit known as petrol which is solely imported by NNPC. There are several importers of diesel, this has created intense competition in the market.

So some players are reportedly offering low-quality diesel to stay competitive in the diesel market and drive profit up. According to a statement by the Managing Director, NNPC Retail Limited Managing Director, Billy Okoye, motorists must be careful of the substandard product.

“The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has raised an alarm over the prevalent low grade and contaminated AGO, otherwise called diesel, offered at discounted prices in parts of the country.” the statement reads.

Okoye said the substandard product is harmful to machines and the environment, so motorists should patronise NNPC where high quality diesel is told. He said NNPC, which is a market leader, assures Nigerians of only premium diesel, Okoye disclosed in the statement issued by Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division for NNPC, Kennie Obateru.
