Dr Seyi Oyesola, the Chief Executive Officer of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Consultants (A3C) has revealed that over 90 per cent of successful surgical operations depend on inputs and services from anaesthetic medicine.
Oyesola disclosed this during a visit by the anaesthesia team to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Anaesthesia is the use of medicines to prevent pain during surgery and other procedures.
Oyesola said doctors rely on the services of anaesthetists and the intensive care units to arrive at successful medical procedures and treatments.
“More than 90 per cent of patients with successful surgical operations are managed based on anaesthetic medicine.
“In this era of modern medicine, anaesthetic professionals play a foremost role in ensuring that medical procedures and surgeries are successfully carried out.
“It is the role of an anaesthetic scientist to provide a conducive atmosphere for surgery to take place; which includes putting the patient to a reversible sleep, ensuring the patient is alive and mobile during the surgical procedure and waking him/her up after the surgery.
“The instances where a patient dies during or after surgery can be as a result of wrong administration of anaesthetics.
“Therefore, it is necessary for anaesthetics services to be handled by qualified anaesthetists or intensive care clinicians,” Oyesola said.
