Donovanosis: UK Doctors Issue Warning About Flesh-Eating Sex

Doctors in the United Kingdom have issued a warning that the flesh-eating sexually transmitted disease known as Donovanosis is spreading and that it affects men more than women.

Donovanosis is said to be a rare disease that "progressively destroys genital tissue". Reports reveal that it is currently spreading in the UK.

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) reveals that the early symptoms of the disease include “beefy-red lesions” that can appear on the genitals or around the anus that begin to wear away over time transforming them into “raised, beefy-red, velvety nodules called granulation tissue.

If left untreated, Donovanosis slowly destroys the genital tissue and spreads beyond the genitals to other parts of the body, including the thighs and lower abdomen.

The flesh-eating infection is caused by bacteria found in some countries like South Africa, Brazil, and India but it is now being seen in the UK.

Data from Public Health England shows that there was a dip during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown but now gynecologist Dr. Shree Datta told The Sun that the disease was becoming "more common" and that people should be aware of it.

Datta said, "As well as the awful symptoms, it’s important people are aware that it’s a known risk factor for the transmission of HIV.

"The early signs are lumps around the genitals or anus that increase in size and take on a beefy-red appearance.

"These can develop into ulcers that, without treatment, can become infected, which can result in pain and an unpleasant smell. It’s more likely to affect men.”

Speaking further, the London doctor disclosed that the best way to avoid contracting the disease, which is treated with antibiotics, is through the practice of safe sex.
