Doyin Okupe Sentenced To Two Years In Prison For Money Laundering

The Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Doyin Okupe, has been given a two-and-a-half-year sentence for money laundering.

It was previously reported that Okupe who is the Director-General of the Peter Obi presidential campaign was convicted by a Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday.

Giving her judgement, the presiding judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, found Okupe guilty of contravening sections 16 (1) & (2) of the Money Laundering Act and accepting cash in excess of the threshold allowed under the Act without going through a financial institution.

Okupe's money laundering saga dates back to 2019 when he was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) 2019 on a 59-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering and diversion of funds to the tune of N702 million.

He was reported to have received money from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) while Sambo Dasuki was in office.
