DR Congo beat Egypt on penalties in AFCON Round of 16

DR Congo will play Guinea in the quarter-finals as they overcame Egypt on penalties.

The match ended 1-1 in a regulation tie with the DR Congo side drawing first blood in the 37th minute of the encounter.

Mechak Elia bundled the ball over the line after the initial attempt deflected into his path for the opening goal. However, Egypt pulled a goal back in the 45+1 minute from the Penalty spot.

Mostafa Mohamed took the responsibility from 12 yards to send the DR Congo goalkeeper the wrong way. It finished 1-1 at the break.

After the restart, both sides continued to search for the elusive goal but none could find it either as it finished 1-1 apiece at regulation time.

With the match proceeding to the extra time, Egypt was reduced to 10 men in the first half of the extra time.

Mohamed Hamdi was shown a red card for a clumsy challenge in the 97th minute. He was initially booked with a yellow card in the 66th minute.

The match would go into penalties as the extra time didn't produce a winner. With the penalty deadlocked at 7-7, both goalkeepers stepped up to determine the fate of his side.

Egypt's goalkeeper missed his kick as it clipped the top of the bar for a goal-kick leaving the DR Congo goalkeeper with a chance to send his side into the quarter-final.

Lionel Nsau Mpasi stepped up and sent his opposite number Mohamed Gabaski the wrong way and the whole DR Congo side ran to celebrate as it finished 8-7 in their favour at the end of the Penalty shootout.
