Driver arraigned for theft of friend’s tricycle

A 34-year-old man named Rabiu Adamu stood before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, facing accusations of stealing a tricycle belonging to his friend, Salisu Haruna.

Adamu, a resident of the Kawo area in Kaduna and a tricycle operator, has been charged with theft.

Inspector Chidi Leo, the prosecutor, alleged that on May 6th, Adamu moved the tricycle belonging to the complainant without his knowledge. The complainant had parked the tricycle, valued at N1.2 million, in front of his residence at Hayin Banki, Kawo, Kaduna.

The prosecutor said the tricycle, with registration number KAD 211 DC, was later recovered from the defendant, who was then arrested.

Leo added that during the police interrogation, the defendant could not give a satisfactory explanation of what he was doing with the tricycle.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017, which stipulates three years of imprisonment for anyone convicted of stealing.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.

Emmanuel ordered that the surety provide a recent passport photograph and a valid identification card, which must be verified by the court registrar. He adjourned the matter until June 18 for hearing.
