As citizens of the world celebrate this year's Earth Day, Google has created an animated Doodle to honour mother nature.

Earth Day 2021 focuses on natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world's ecosystems. The day set aside for the celebration is today, April 22, and across the globe, many pledge their support for environmental protection.

The United Nations designated April 22 as 'International Mother Earth Day' in 2009, and in a recent statement said: "Recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic is a chance to set the world on a cleaner, greener, more sustainable path.

"Mother Earth is clearly urging a call to action. Let's remind more than ever on this International Mother Earth Day that we need a shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet."

First observed in 1970, Earth Day came about when 20 million people took to the streets to protest against environmental degradation. Their demonstration was triggered by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill and other issues including polluted rivers and smog.'

Earth Day continued to play a vital role in environmental activism in the next half-century and in 2016, the landmark Paris Agreement (which brings nearly 200 nations together for the common goal of reducing global greenhouse emissions) was signed on Earth Day 2016.

The United Nations says International Mother Earth Day is celebrated to remind us that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance.

According to earthday.org, the aim of Earth Day is to "build the world's largest environmental movement to drive transformative change for people and the planet."

The mission of the movement is to "diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement nationwide."
