Earthquake Hits California, Causes Power Outage

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake has struck off the coast of California, resulting in power outages.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake, about 24 miles off the coast of the port city of Eureka on Tuesday.

It added that the earthquake cut power to more than 70,000 people in Humboldt County.

The Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services in a statement said; “Power is out across the county.

"Do not call 911 unless you are experiencing an immediate emergency.”

It also said the earthquake caused numerous gas leaks, spoilt powerlines and resulted in at least one fire in the city of Ferndale.

California is regularly shaken by tremors and earthquake capable of causing widespread destruction.

An earthquake in 1994 left at least 60 people dead.
