Ebonyi: Two beheaded in community attack

Two additional people are said to have died in another attack in Igede village in the Akparata region of the Effium community, which is located in the Ohaukwu Local Government region of Ebonyi State.

This attack occurred less than twenty-four hours after two people were killed and seven others were kidnapped at Ikachi village.

During the attack on Monday morning, the two people had their heads chopped off and their homes destroyed. It was also reported that a 10-year-old child had gone during the attack.

Joshua Ukandu, a spokesman for the Ebonyi State Police Command, told Channels Television that the attack had been confirmed.

He mentioned that the neighbourhood has military and mobile police officers stationed there to safeguard the populace and prevent retaliation.

Allnews.ng had previously reported that gunmen launched a deadly attack on the Umuihe autonomous community, Akaeze, situated in the Ivo local government area of Ebonyi State, resulting in the tragic death of the community's traditional ruler, HRH Omazi Ibo Ubani.

Reports indicate that the assailants engaged in heavy gunfire upon their invasion of the community, sparking chaos as residents scrambled for safety.

Confirming the incident, Chinasa Okorie, the coordinator of Akaeze Development Centre, revealed that the assault occurred around 10:00 pm last Friday.

Okorie strongly condemned the brutal killing of the monarch, highlighting the irreplaceable loss to the community due to his exceptional qualities.

Describing the late monarch, who was in his 60s, as a courageous and astute leader, Okorie emphasized the void his passing leaves in the community, local government, and the state at large.

"I received a distressing call informing me of the shooting at the residence of our traditional ruler, which tragically resulted in his death. HRH Eze Umazi Ibo Ubani's demise is a significant blow to our community. He embodied integrity, intelligence, and fearlessness," Okorie lamented.

He expressed deep sorrow over the loss, emphasizing the late ruler's unwavering commitment to upholding integrity and serving his community with distinction.

Okorie urged the security agencies to swiftly investigate the incident and apprehend those responsible for the heinous act.

“I have been calling everyone and nobody told me there was a crisis or problem in the community to warrant such incident. Maybe when normalcy returns, we will know the cause of everything”, he stated.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu who confirmed the incident said policemen were after the assailants.

“Immediately we got a distress call on the incident, we swung into action and the assailants had already left the scene by the time our men moved to the scene but we are trailing the assailants”, he said.
