As the people of Edo decide their number one citizen on Saturday, September 19th, 2020, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the state, Godwin Obaseki has said that "we are determined to end godfatherism in Nigeria".
AllNews reports that the two leading contenders are Obaseki and Osagie Ize – Iyamu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obaseki is running for reelection after being denied renomination by the APC arising from his falling out with Adams Oshiomhole who was then the national chairman of the APC.
Ize-Iyamu was a principal official of Oshiomhole’s government until he left the APC in 2016 and was nominated as the PDP candidate but lost the election to Obaseki, then of the APC.
Both candidates have now directly swapped parties and the backing of Oshiomhole.
Addressing his supporters via his official Twitter handle after Tuesday's Edo State PDP final mega rally, Obaseki boasted of victory, stating that he has "gotten the endorsement of over 120 groups".
We stand by democracy in Edo. Democracy is govt of the people, by the people and for the people, not govt by godfathers. We have defeated the local godfather in Edo State and the main godfather has become jilttery. But we are determined to end godfatherism in Nigeria.

I have gotten the endorsement of over 120 groups, including labour unions, LGA workers, artisans, among others. So we are confident of victory.

Until I joined @OfficialPDPNig I never knew what brotherhood in politics meant. I appreciate the love and support from fellow governors and supporters across the country.

Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice-President of Nigeria and PDP presidential candidate in the last election in the West African country, has urged electorates in Edo "to turn out en masse to cast and defend their vote for Obaseki".
Atiku in a three-tweet thread on his verified handle on Tuesday expressed his hope that voters' choice would count.
I urge all duly registered voters of conscience and who truly care about the wellbeing of Edo to turn out enmasse to cast and defend their vote for @GovernorObaseki.
