The Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth, and Advancement (YIAGA) has identified low turnout of voters as a major worry of the governorship election that held on September 19 in Edo state.
Making this disclosure during a twitter chat on Wednesday, YIAGA explained that the number of voters who came out to cast their votes was nothing compared with the number of registered voters.
Further praising the voters for their conduct at the election, YIAGA however stated that the low turnout of voters during the election remained a major issue.
"While voters may have conducted themselves well, the decline in voter turnout remains a major issue. Looking at the statistics for Registered voters, the number of PVCs collected, and then the turnout, it leaves more questions than answers," a tweet by Yiaga read.
Prior to the election, statistics rolled out by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed that 2,210,534 made up the population of voters in the state.
However, 1,726,738 people were eligible to vote as they had in their possession their permanent voters card which is mandatory to vote.
Out of the 1,726,738 eligible voters, only 557,443, voters came out to vote.
