Edo guber: Plans to impeach me over PDP primary underway —

Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has voiced concerns about what he describes as a concerted effort to remove him from office.

According to Shaibu, the scheme gained steam after he emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) factional candidate for the state's 2024 governorship race.

The dispute surrounding the PDP governorship primary in Edo State began when the returning officer, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, declared Asue Ighodalo the winner with 577 votes.

A parallel primary held at the Deputy Governor's Benin mansion resulted in different results, with the returning officer, Bartholomew Moses, crowning Shaibu the winner, claiming victory "with over 300 votes."

During a press conference in Abuja, Shaibu voiced an alarm about the political manoeuvring, claiming that he has received threats of impeachment for insisting on running in the election.

He stated, “Even as we speak, my team has been calling me that, ‘Look at what these people are doing. They are saying they are going to impeach you; that you have gotten too far.’ They are threatening to impeach me.”

Shaibu emphasised that his decision to run in the election is within his constitutional rights and cannot be challenged.

He said that any attempt to impeach him for exercising his constitutional rights would be open to judicial interpretation, with the courts having the final say.

The PDP deputy governorship candidate went on to say that the protracted political stalemate is about more than just his own goals; it is also about battling for people's rights.

He asked his supporters to be steadfast, promising them that the constitution would decide the legality of his candidature.
