EFCC Nabs Kogi Assembly Candidate With N326m, $610,500 Cash

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a member of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) contesting for member at the Kogi State House of Assembly in the 2023 election.

The candidate identified as Ismaila Atumeyi was nabbed in possession of N326 million and $140,500 cash.

This was confirmed to The Punch by the spokesperson of the commission, Wilson Uwujaren.

Atumeyi was arrested on Sunday alongside one Joshua Dominic, an alleged serial fraudster.

The duo were nabbed in a sting operation at Macedonia Street, Queens Estate, Karsana, Gwarinpa, Abuja.

Operatives of the EFCC also nabbed one Abdumalik Femi, a former bank employee in connection with the fraud.

Femi allegedly supplied the inside information that facilitated the attack on the bank by the syndicate.

Spokesperson of the EFCC, Uwujaren said Femi was arrested today (Tuesday) at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Lagos.

According to him: “Following his arrest, a search was conducted on his home in Morgan Estate, Ojodu where a total of $470,000 was recovered.

“The arrest of the suspects followed months of investigation into the hacking of one of the commercial banks by a syndicate of fraudsters who pulled off a heist of N1.4billion."

One of the suspects, Atumeyi is currently seeking to represent Ankpa 11 Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly in the forthcoming 2023 election.

Uwujaren added that the suspects would be charged to court upon completion of an investigation.
