EFL Championship: Rodriguez Scores Twice To Lift Burnley Into Top Spot

EFL Championship: Rodriguez Scores Twice To Lift Burnley Int

Jay Rodriguez Scores brace v Swansea City

English forward Jay Rodriguez struck twice as Burnley hammered 10-man Swansea City 4-0 to move to the top of the Championship on Saturday.

The Swans' run of four straight wins was brought to an end by goals from Vitinho, Rodriguez and Anass Zaroury, and their misery was compounded by a straight red card for top-scorer Joel Piroe for violent conduct with 15 minutes remaining.

The result meant Vincent Kompany's Clarets, relegated from the Premier League last season, extended their unbeaten run to 12 games in all competitions.

"The performance was good and filled with energy," said former Manchester City captain Kompany.

"One of the things I put forward as much as the result is to give the fans something to be happy about."

Sheffield United fell to second on goal difference after failing to beat nine-man Blackpool in a 3-3 draw at Bramall Lane.

Oliver Norwood's goal deep into stoppage time rescued a point for the Blades before both sides also had a man sent off after the full-time whistle.

United had looked comfortable following goals from James McAtee and Iliman Ndiaye, but Jerry Yates struck twice to make it all-square at the break and Kenny Dougall made it 3-2 to Blackpool early in the second half.

Marvin Ekpiteta and Dominic Thompson were then shown red cards in the closing stages and Rhian Brewster missed a penalty for the hosts.

But Norwood's strike eight minutes into stoppage time levelled the scores before Blades goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and Blackpool striker Shayne Lavery were both dismissed in a post-match brawl.

Norwich missed the chance to return to the top of the table after a 2-1 defeat at Watford.

Imran Louza and Keinan Davis fired the Hornets into a 2-0 lead before Josh Sargeant pulled a goal back for the Canaries.

The victory lifts Watford up to 10th and within two points of the playoff places.

QPR's five-game unbeaten run came to an end as they slipped to a 3-1 defeat against Luton, while Blackburn beat Middlesbrough 2-1 to move into the top six.

Managerless West Brom defeated Reading 2-0 to end their eight-match run without a Championship victory.

There were also wins for Stoke, bottom side Coventry, Rotherham, Millwall and Sunderland.
