Egyptian Archaeologists Discover 2,500-Year-Old Coffins

Egyptian archaeologists have unearthed more than 13 sealed coffins that travel as far back as 2,500 years ago, and they remained intact.

In a statement by the Egyptian Tourism and Antiquities Minister, Khaled al-Anany, the discovery marked the "largest number of coffins" at a burial site since the Asasif Cachette was discovered in 2019.

The site was visited by both the minister and the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), Mostafa Waziri.

Al-Anany said, "The discovery marks the largest number of coffins found in one burial place since the discovery of the Asasif Cachette."

"The discovery in Saqqara includes a wonderful collection of coloured wooden coffins whose colours and inscriptions are still in a good condition despite the passage of 2,500 years," Waziri said.

According to Waziri, the precise number of coffins discovered and the titles and identities of the occupants are yet to be ascertained.

Although, he said that the information would be confirmed in the coming few days, as archaeologists were still in the process of exhumation.

Waziri added, "The mission continues excavation work on the site and it is expected to result in many other new discoveries of shafts, coloured wooden coffins and statues."
