Ekiti: Man to die by hanging for murdering friend

Adedayo Olawole, 29, has been condemned to death by hanging by the Ekiti State High Court in Ado Ekiti for the murder of Chukwudi Joseph.

Olawole was also sentenced to seven years in jail for conspiracy in the murder of the deceased. He was arraigned on Wednesday on two counts of conspiracy and murder.

The charge reads: “That Adedayo Olawole and others now at large at Eporo in Emure-Ekiti did conspire to murder one Chukwudi Joseph. The offences are contrary to Sections 244 and 243 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, Nigeria, 2021.”

A cousin of the deceased who saw the incident testified against Olawole, alleging that the defendant and his gang battered and stabbed Joseph on the left side of his chest.

The prosecutor, Ibironke Odetola, called six witnesses and presented the defendant's testimonies, photos of the deceased, and other supporting documents as evidence.

Justice Jubril Aladejana stated that hitting the deceased with planks before stabbing him demonstrated that the assailants meant to cause severe bodily damage or his death.

Justice Aladejana stated that the prosecution has established beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant and others plotted to commit the criminal murder.

He said: “On count one, conspiracy, the defendant is sentenced to seven years imprisonment without an option of fine. On count two, murder, the sentence of this court upon Adedayo Olawole is that you shall be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul.”

Meanwhile, following an unintentional discharge of stray shots from his gun that killed two youths in the state capital of Ado-Ekiti, a policeman in Ekiti State has been taken into custody at the state command.

Allnews.ng gathered that the incident happened on Tuesday night in the Omisanjana neighbourhood of Ado Ekiti, and caused chaos in the community.

The victims, who were among the area's youths, died tragically when police were seeking to capture a suspected internet fraudster.

An anonymous source who spoke with Leadership said, “The fraudster had hit a bike man and the passenger while they were being pursued by the policemen who caused the accident. But the irate youths stopped them from arresting them. It was in that process the gun was shot and two people were killed.”

Another source said, “Trouble started when some youths accosted a ‘hit and run’ driver who knocked a commercial motorcyclist and a passenger, breaking the legs and arms of the victims in the process.

“The yet-to-be-identified driver put a call to the men of the Rapid Response Squad. One of them opened fire and hit two persons in the process. They were confirmed dead at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.”
