Ekiti market in pandemonium as gunmen kill rice hawker

A rice hawker in Ado Ekiti's Bisi market has been killed by gunmen who are yet to be identified, leaving the busy market in a state of pandemonium. 

According to reports, the gunmen on a motorcycle shot and murdered the rice hawker at a market in the heart of the state capital.

The development compelled vendors and bystanders to run for safety and close shops. 

Some of the traders, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, stated that they would not return to the market for the time being. 

Meanwhile, gunmen opened fire on the teaching hospital road area in Ado Ekiti, killing Alfa Taofeek, a Point of Sale agent.

According to reports, Alfa Taofeek was shot and killed by the gunmen who arrived on a motorbike, and they fled with his money and other belongings.

After dropping his children off at school, Alfa was just starting his business when the men from the underworld attacked, according to a source who wishes to remain anonymous.

As supporters flocked to the scene, they praised the dead as modest and laid-back and urged the authorities to put an end to these kinds of murders.

Still, in Ekiti, a man, Ojo Ayegbusi has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 15-year-old girl. He was convicted by an Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday.

The defendant, who committed the offence on November 11, 2020, at Ikole Ekiti, was charged with the offence of rape.

As stated in the charge, “The innocent survivor (victim) of the rape was coming from school when she was accosted by the defendant who lured her into his room and had carnal knowledge of her.

“She could not tell anybody of her nasty experience, but her father found out when the girl was rushed to hospital after she collapsed at home and blood was gushing out of her private parts."

Consequently, the defendant was arrested and arraigned in court.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Ekiti State, Julius Ajibare, said, “The offence of rape is contrary to Section 31(2) of the Child’s Rights Law, Cap.C7, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.
