Ike Ekweremadu has been sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison by the Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey, UK.
The former deputy senate president was handed the jail term on Friday and his wife Beatrice was also sentenced to four years and six months in prison.
Speaking to the defendants, Justice Johnson stated: “In each of your cases, the offence you committed is so serious that neither a fine nor a community sentence can be justified.”
The verdict comes after Ekweremadu was judged guilty by the jury on March 23, 2023, alongside his spouse and Obinna Obeta, a doctor who acted as the middleman.
Obeta received a 10-year prison sentence.
According to the jury, the couple conspired to bring a 21-year-old street trader to London to exploit him for his kidney.
The sentencing is the first of its kind in the United Kingdom under the Modern Slavery Act 2015.
