Ekweremadu: Group Asks Ugwuanyi, Southeast Governors To Intervene

Ekweremadu: Group Asks Ugwuanyi, Southeast Governors To Inte

Ndi Oganiru Enugu State has called on the governor of the state, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and other Southeast leaders to take action towards the release of former Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu.

Ekweremadu is currently in detention having been charged by the United Kingdom government for bringing a child to the UK for alleged organ harvesting.

The group however mandated Ugwuanyi to urgently convene a meeting of Southeast governors and leaders in order to approach the federal government with a view to getting Ekweremadu out of detention.

In a press conference in Enugu on Thursday, the President of Ndi Oganiru Enugu State, Chief Jude Asogwa, called on other sons and daughters of the Southeast to wake up, knowing that Ekweremadu has been fighting for the Igbo cause.

The group also called on the Attorney General of the federation to use the same process they used in getting an unnamed Nigerian lady arrested for drug-related offence in the past to secure Ekweremadu's release.

"It baffles us that till now Enugu State has not called an emergency meeting of southeast governors forum and southeast stakeholders meeting to find a way of approaching the federal government to bail an illustrious son and its senator.

"Rumours have been flying that the UK government has been paid to keep His Excellency Prof. Sen Ike Ekweremadu till after the 2023 election or even kill him if possible.

"We don't want to believe that because it's a rumour.

"We call on the UK as a matter of urgency to release Ike Ekweremadu.

"The UK government should know that we are very much aware that a bail was given to his Excellency Prof. Sen Ike Ekweremadu and the wife.

"The bail condition that was extremely difficult was met and the UK government refused granting both of them bail.

"Why would a Nigerian Senator be held because he is trying to save the ailing daughter and he wrote to you in clear terms the purpose of his travel and the intention because there was no negative intent?

"We Ndi Oganiru Enugu State who are in the 36 states of Nigeria and 16 countries of the world call on the UK government to release His Excellency Prof Sen. Ike Ekweremadu because the whole world is watching.

"Southeast governors, Southeast stakeholders, Nigerian government, Africa in general needs to wake up and rescue Africa.

"Ndi Oganiru Enugu State appeals to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari to assist us and get one of his best senators out."
