Emma Raducanu Crashes Out Of Australian Open In Second Round

Emma Raducanu Crashes Out Of Australian Open In Second Roun

British number one Emma Raducanu has bowed out of the Australian Open following her loss to Coco Gauff in a captivating second-round match.

Raducanu, ranked 77th in the world, slipped to a 6-3 7-6 (7-4) defeat in her debut on Red Laver Arena.

The 20-year-old who wore tape on her left ankle because of an injury sustained before the tournament had a poor start as she fell 0-30 down on her opening service game.

She battled back to hold but couldn't take one of two set points at 5-4 in the second to force a deciding set which might have led to a different outcome.

The defeat for Raducanu means that she is yet to make it past the second round of a Grand Slam since her stunning 2021 US Open win.

Gauff, aiming for her first Grand Slam title as one of Melbourne's favourites, heaped praises on the Briton after progressing to the third round where she will face Chinese 29th seed Qinwen Zheng or fellow American Bernarda Pera in the third on Friday.

"I told myself to hang in there, Emma played really good tennis towards the end of the match," said 18-year-old Gauff.

"It was a good quality match for the most part. This was a long-anticipated match-up so I'm glad it was a good match for the crowd."

With Raducanu's exit in the second round of the tournament, Britain has no player left in the women's singles.
