#ENDSARS: Governors' Forum Commends IGP On Sars Ban

The Nigerian Governors' Forum (NGF) has commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, for the ban placed on the activities of the Federal Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS).

Speaking on behalf of the governors, Kayode Fayemi, the Ekiti State Governor and chairman of the forum held that Nigerian Youths should not be criminalized on account of how they look.

Fayemi also requested that law enforcement officers that acted unprofessionally while carrying out their duties against ordinary Nigerians be sanctioned.

Stating that the news of the ban placed on SARS was received with great relief, Fayemi said that the governors were in support of the IGP's orders which bans personnel of the force from embarking on patrols or tactical assignments in mufti henceforth.

“This will significantly reduce the various infractions of the Force that ordinary Nigerians have been complained about.

“We also believe this will bring an end to the menace of SARS brutality on the people they are meant to protect," Fayemi's statement read.

He applauded the IGP for issuing the directive at a time when a majority of Nigerians were unhappy with SARS.

“It is helpful to recall that SARS has been cautioned for the same behaviour before, only for it to go back to its old ways.

“Our young people should not be criminalized simply on account of how they look or their mode of dressing or the cars they drive, the type of phones they carry, etc. This is an assault on their fundamental human rights.

“We think this is a timely clinical response by the leadership of the Nigerian Police Force and I must commend IGP Adamu for his promptness and boldness,” the statement added.

He further called for a swift implementation of the ban.

It will be recalled that AllNews on Sunday reported that the IGP banned SARS and other police tactical squad from routine patrols.
