#EndSARS: Popular Islamic Cleric, Farouq Onikijipa Sends Mes

A prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Sulaimon Farouq 'Onikijipa' has implored the administration of Muhammadu Buhari to 'please listen to the protesting #EndSARS youths for peace to reign' in Nigeria.

The Kwara-State-born preacher who is the Founder of Al-Amaani Islamic Organization explained that President Buhari could make Nigerian youths know that he understood their plight and would make life better for them.

"A lot has been happening in Nigeria in the past few days. May God Almighty take total control," Sheikh Farouq said in a recent interview with ISPAR TV Yoruba.

"May He grant our leaders the patience to listen to the demands of the youths.

"The Holy Qur'an gave us many rights, of which the most important is our right to life.

"Islam doesn't support wasting souls."

'Onikijipa' adds:

"The way they collectively came out to demand [for] their rights is what makes them powerful.

"And Islam is not averse to that.

"So, if they are fighting for their right, and doing so with the fear of God, it is permissible.

"Meanwhile, their protest must not lead to violence cum killings.

"Islam forbids unlawful acts.

End SARS protests ceaseless

The street protests against started about two weeks ago to demand an end to police brutality, with mainly young people using the social media hashtag #EndSARS to rally people to demand the closure of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The unit, formed during military rule in 1984, was accused of extortion, torture and murder.

The protests have also been backed by global celebrities such as Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, US rapper Kanye West, footballers Marcus Rashford, Mesut Ozil and Tammy Abraham as well as Nigerian superstars, Tiwa Savage, Davido and Wizkid.

The government agreed to disband SARS, but protests have since snowballed into calls for wider reforms with protesters now also using the hashtags #EndBadGovernance, #BetterNigeria and #FixNigeriaNow to build support on social media.
