Engineers Vow To Tackle Quackery In Enugu

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Enugu State chapter has vowed to cub the menace of quackery in the engineering profession in the state.

Engr. Chigbo Obealor, the new Chairman of the body in the state made this known during his investiture as the 20th chairman of the branch and inauguration of its executives in Enugu.

Obealor said that his administration will enlighten residents of the state to identify and shun quacks.

He said that quackery persists because the people do not know the difference between real engineers and interlopers who do not possess the necessary qualifications and expertise to practice in the field.

"There are so many interlopers who call themselves engineers.

"Even the general public do not know the difference.

"Anyone who carries a hand trowel is an engineer. Anyone with a spanner is an engineer.

"So we are trying to sieve the wheat from the chaff so that when you see an engineer you will know that this is an engineer.

"By the virtue of this investiture, Enugu State engineers are taking a step further to go to the grassroots to enlighten them as to the essence of engineering and who are the engineers."

On his part, the keynote speaker at the event, Engr. Obiora Nwankwo said that it is time to expunge quackery in the engineering profession, stating that real engineers have suffered incalculable damages due to the activities of quacks.

He urged residents to always enter into binding agreements with any engineer before commissioning them for projects, noting that it is the standard practice in other parts of the world.
