Enugu Government Tasks Stakeholders On Ways For Effective NY

The Enugu State Government has urged stakeholders to proffer best solutions to effective NYSC scheme to enhance productivity and human capacity for the betterment of the society.

Manfred Nzekwe, the State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, who is the chairman of the NYSC governing board, gave the advice in Enugu during a one-day workshop on Tuesday.

Nzekwe, who was represented by a Director in the ministry, Boniface Onovo, said the workshop, which was for the security and welfare of the youths came at the right time.

In her keynote address, the Acting Director General, NYSC, Christy Uba, appreciated the stakeholders and their wonderful contribution to keep NYSC ideas alive.

Uba, represented by the Director, NYSC South East Area office, Enugu, Ngozi Nwatarali, said the workshop was pivotal as it brings together representatives of state and Local Government Councils and others.

The acting director said that the quest for improved productivity and the security of the corp members were among the issues of discussion at the workshop and for the corps members to contribute immensely in their places of primary assignment.

"The unquantifiable benefits of the education and energy imbued in these youths can be harnessed only when an enabling environment is created for them to effectively make their contributions.

"Corps members have demonstrated in the past that they can help to remedy the crisis in the education, health infrastructure development through Community Development Service (CDS) and other sectors," she said.

She stated that non-availability of transit hostels, with little or no priority given to monthly stipends, non payment of transport allowance, lack of schedules for corps members in government ministries and agencies, hamper their performances.

Earlier, Sam Ujogu, the NYSC coordinator, Enugu, said the veterans of this philosophy were to mobilise the Nigerian youths and deploy them to places where they could be productive.

“I am convinced that the eminent personalities present will make recommendations that will adequately address the theme of this workshop.

“I wish to express our sincere gratitude to the government of Enugu State, which is one of our core employers and for setting the pace and absorbing the capacity of corps members for developmental progress of the state, taking the welfare of corps
developmental progress of the state and the welfare of corps members as priority.

“We urge other core employers to emulate the state government in giving priority to the welfare and security of Corps members,” Ujogu said.

The workshop has its theme as “Achieving Improved Productivity of Corps Members Through Enhanced Welfare and Security During Service Year”.
