Enugu LG Defies Court Order, Demolishes Community Market

Awgu LG chairman, Hon. Pedro Nwankwo

Displaced traders of Orie Market Awgu in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State have accused the council administration of unlawfully destroying the market.

Speaking in Enugu, the traders said that the Local Government ignored a court order and destroyed shops in the market.

They alleged that the council demolished the market, took over the land and sold same portion to politicians inspite of a subsisting court order.

They noted that initial attempts by the Local Government to takeover the market promoted them to approach the court in Suit No: HAW/28/2021 to stop the action.

The matter has Adumike Moses and three others, for themselves and on behalf of the indegenous owners of Orie Market land as plaintiffs.

The defendants in the matter includes the Local Government Chairman, Pedro Nwankwo and 11 others.

They were accused of destroying the property of the plaintiffs at orie daily market Awgu Local Government Area.

The traders subsequently obtained a court injunction dated 21/12/2021 which restrained “the defendants from further activities, pulling down, excavations, constructions on the market, subject matter of this suit pending further proceedings.”

This order, the traders noted has continuously been violated by the council thereby reating tension in the community.

The traders called on Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to call the Local Government Administration to order to forestall breakdown of law and order.
