Enugu: Police arrest, arraign masquerader over assault on fe

The Enugu State Police Command says its agents in Nsukka apprehended a masquerade known as Oriokpa, who recently abused a woman nurse in a viral video.

Allnews.ng had previously reported how a female nurse, Miss Ogbonna, who was on her way to duty call earlier this month, was beaten to a pulp by a throng of masquerades at the University of Nigeria town of Nsukka.

A video clip from the event went viral across all social media platforms in the country.

Enugu police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe said in a statement on Wednesday that the masquerader, Ugwuoke Ebube, was apprehended and charged. He did, however, confirm that the suspect was given bail.

According to him, the arrest followed an assault on another victim at the Ugwuoye junction in the Nsukka area of the state.

Part of the statement reads, “An investigation into the case suggests that the suspect was part of a group of masqueraders that similarly assaulted a female nurse riding a motorcycle, as captured in a viral video in April 2024.

“He was today, May 22, 2024, arraigned in the Nsukka Magistrate Court of Enugu State, Nigeria, but was granted bail by the court.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, psc (+), while condemning the act, has warned those intending to hide under the guise of culturally celebrating masquerades to commit such criminal acts of assault against fellow citizens to desist forthwith”.

Meanwhile, three notorious armed robbers have been arrested by the Enugu State Police Command on charges of armed robbery and terrorising residents of the state's Oji-River axis and Enugu city.

From the suspects, the authorities also retrieved guns and other dangerous items. This was revealed in a statement made on Saturday in Enugu by DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesperson for the Command.

Ndukwe disclosed that on May 7, at around 1:30 pm, detectives from the Awkunanaw Police Division apprehended a 31-year-old suspect (name withheld), but his accomplices managed to get away.

He added that the man had one handgun that looked like a Beretta that had been made locally by the operators.

“The suspect’s arrest followed the receipt of a report from a tricyclist, who alleged that a gang of armed robbers, on May 6, diverted and robbed him of his cash, phone, and other belongings while conveying them to Garriki in Awkunanaw, Enugu.

“Upon leading the detectives to the scene of the incident, the suspect sighted them and attempted to escape before he was caught, and the firearm was recovered from him.

"The victim was able to identify the suspect as one of the same armed gang members that robbed him the previous night,” he said.
