Enugu: Police arrest three notorious armed robbers terrorisi

Three notorious armed robbers have been arrested by the Enugu State Police Command on charges of armed robbery and terrorising residents of the state's Oji-River axis and Enugu city.

From the suspects, the authorities also retrieved guns and other dangerous items. This was revealed in a statement made on Saturday in Enugu by DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesperson for the Command.

Ndukwe disclosed that on May 7, at around 1:30 pm, detectives from the Awkunanaw Police Division apprehended a 31-year-old suspect (name withheld), but his accomplices managed to get away.

He added that the man had one handgun that looked like a Beretta that had been made locally by the operators.

“The suspect’s arrest followed the receipt of a report from a tricyclist, who alleged that a gang of armed robbers, on May 6, diverted and robbed him of his cash, phone, and other belongings while conveying them to Garriki in Awkunanaw, Enugu.

“Upon leading the detectives to the scene of the incident, the suspect sighted them and attempted to escape before he was caught, and the firearm was recovered from him.

“The victim was able to identify the suspect as one of the same armed gang members that robbed him the previous night,” he said.

According to Ndukwe, on May 3 at around 5:20 am, Oji-River Police Division agents collaborated with members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group to apprehend two suspects (names withheld) for suspected robbery.

He said that the suspects, who live in Trans-Ekulu, Enugu, robbed their victim of money, a phone, and other items while brandishing toy guns.

According to him, the agents also took from the suspects two fake revolver handguns, a stolen Honda, and a syringe filled with what seemed to be acid and other objects.

"The suspects allegedly used the toy guns to snatch the recovered car from a suspect, and robbed him of his cash, handset, and belongings, at Amaetiti-Akwu in Achi community of Oji-River LGA, on May 3, at about 5:05 a.m.

“But they could not escape, as the operatives gave them a hot chase and apprehended them after the car skidded off the road into the bush,” he said.

He stated that when the cases' investigations were over, the suspects would face charges in court.
