Enyimba Claim Record Ninth NPL Title

Enyimba FC emerged as winners of the 2022/23 Nigeria Premier League (NPL) to claim a record ninth title on Sunday.

The Peoples Elephant achieved the laudable feat after a one-all draw against defending champions Rivers United in their final game of the Super Six play-off at the Mobalaji Johnson Stadium on Sunday.

The draw ensured that the Finidi George-led side finished the campaign ahead of second-placed Remo Stars as a result of a superior goal difference top the NPL Super Six playoffs standings with nine points from five games.

The scoring was opened by Enyimba in the 39th minute courtesy of well-taken strike from Ekene Awazie before the break.

At 1-0 down, Rivers United came into the second half looking sharper and immediately got the equaliser through Nyima Nwagua after a goalline scuffle.

After the scoreline was levelled, Enyimba held on for the famous draw to extend their achievement as the most successful club in the Nigerian league.

The result means that the Peoples Elephant will represent Nigeria at the CAF Champions League next season alongside Remo Stars, while Rivers United who finished in third position will represent Nigeria in the CAF Confederation Cup.
