EPL: Chelsea vs Tottenham; Match Preview, Talking Points

EPL: Chelsea vs Tottenham; Match Preview, Talking Points

Chelsea welcomes Tottenham to Stamford Bridge on Sunday for a London Derby as both teams will test out if they have what it takes to win the EPL title on matchday 10.

AllNews understands Jose Mourinho will be facing his two-time employer after already defeating another employer (Manchester United 6-1) this season at Old Trafford.

Chelsea currently sits third on the log with 18 points while Tottenham is joint league leaders with Liverpool on 20 points but lead by goal difference (7).

Tottenham is currently enjoying a five-game winning streak in all competitions and four in the EPL which could even be more if not for the draw against Newcastle and West Ham.

The White Hart Lane outfit are unbeaten in 8 EPL matches losing last to Everton.

Both teams can not use fatigue as an excuse but Chelsea will be the well-rested team playing on Tuesday in France and had four days to rest while Tottenham played at home against Ludogorets and avoided traveling. They would have 3 days to rest.

One important news that would gladden the hearts of Chelsea players is that they would have their fans back in the stadium on Sunday when they face Jose Mourinho's side.

Tottenham is coming off the back of a win in the Europa League against Ludogorets but qualification is not yet confirmed as Chelsea also won the reverse leg against Rennes 1-2 as they already book the last 16 spots.

Chelsea (EPL Build-up)

Chelsea is becoming the team that Frank Lampard invested so much on not just by winning matches but the ease at which they win it.

Squad depth is also another advantage for the Blues as they have a replacement for almost every department. Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is on top form.

The loss of Pulisic to injury and Kai Havertz to COVID-19 has not been noticed at all as Hakim Ziyech, Mason Mount has been very effective in covering their absence.

The recent return to form by Callum Hudson Odoi will also give Lampard some rest to his mind as he now has more options on the wing.

Chelsea has remained unbeaten since their loss to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge (2-0) in all competitions, compared to Tottenham, they are the better side at least psychologically speaking.

In their last 34 away meetings in all competitions, Tottenham has just won one (D11, L22).

Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, and Tammy Abraham are forming a formidable trio upfront, Werner is showing to be more of a playmaker, able to burst into the defense with runs and dribbles but would need the last man to tuck the effort in.

Abraham is also living up to the reputation of being a poacher as he is always on hand to score.

The German International, Werner is the highest scorer for Chelsea with 4 goals, followed by Jorginho on 3 goals which point to another effect of the team, anybody can score, Kurt Zouma has been seen coming to head in corner-kicks

Ben Chilwell, Abraham, is also on the goalscorers list.

Thiago Silva has brought more stability to the defensive line with mobility, experience, and even goals. There are speculations all over London suggesting that Chelsea might trigger a clause to extend his contract by another year.

Alonso, Rudiger, Christensen has fallen down the pecking order as Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, James Recce have taken over the backline.

Tottenham Hotspur (EPL Build-up)

The point of attention of the Blue's defence would be on Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min, as both strikers combine to score more than 12 goals for Tottenham already this season.

Jose Mourinho also rested the duo against Ludogorets using Vinicius, out-of-favour Dele Alli, and Gareth Bale. They would fresh and ready to fire up against Chelsea.

Another bone of contention would be Mourinho is not just facing an old club but also a former player of his, as Lampard played under Jose Mourinho when he was a player.

They have met already this season in the EPL cup but the cup is not the same as the English Premier League with more at stake in the league.

Chelsea will also have their fans back in the game against Tottenham - the lifting of the ban is in London so Tottenham players would be able to access the Stadium too.

Tottenham also will be coming off the 2-0 win against Manchester City which means they have defeated both Manchester teams this season.

In recent games, the number of goals Tottenham score has reduced with Mourinho defensive mind coming into the mix.

The counter-attacking style of Kane dropping and letting the Korean run in on goal will be the recipe for winning. Keeping a box in the midfield allowing the blue's midfielders to spread will give them the opening to score - which was effective against City.

There are several flaws in the Spurs defense as City showed against them, but lack of finishing on the Citizens cost them the match.

Another crucial thing is the Tottenham manager, Jose Mourinho who always pushed to win the league of his club on his second season - except at Manchester United even then he won three trophies including the Europa League.

This match would prove if Spurs will be a title contender or just a participant.

The recent injury to Toby Alderweireld will be a massive blow to the backline going into the London derby but the forward play would be very good with Kane, Son, Lucas Moura, Bale in front.
