EPL: Four-star Newcastle United dent Spurs' Champions League hopes

EPL: Four-star Newcastle United dent Spurs' Champions League

Tottenham Hotspur's European ambitions were dealt a crucial blow on Saturday afternoon as they were thrashed 4-0 by Newcastle United at Saint James Park.

Two quick-fire goals scored in the first half handed the Toons the advantage with Aleksandr Isak the first to put them ahead in the 30th minute.

The Swede latched onto the ball and found the net from close range as United launched a blistering counterattack.

Within the space of 95 seconds, the home side doubled their lead as Anthony Gordon profited from a loose ball to find a similar range as Isak.

Spurs' defending was calamitous and that did not abate in the second half when Isak added a third goal for the hosts as his pace was unbearable for the chasing defenders before slotting the ball past a scrambling Vicario in goal for the north London side.

Isak now has 21 goals in 34 games in all competitions this season

Spurs faithful are hoping that north London rivals Arsenal do not lose to Aston Villa on Sunday as a win for Unai Emery's team will knock them out of the top-four places.

The defeat is the biggest suffered by Spurs since 2012 and the worst for head coach Andre Postecoglu since his arrival from Celtic.
