Ethiopia's Head Of Supreme Court Resigns

The Head of Ethiopia's Supreme Court, Meaza Ashenafi, and her deputy, Solomon Areda Waktolla resigned from their positions on Tuesday.

The reason for their resignation was not stated in a letter they gave to the House of People's Representatives (HoPR) on Tuesday, according to the Addis Standard, a local news source.

To replace Meaza and Solomon, the Parliament later approved Assistant Professor Tewdros Mihret of Addis Ababa University as Chief Justice and Federal Supreme Court Judge Abeba Embiale as Deputy Chief Justice.

On November 1, 2018, PM Abiy Ahmed proposed Chief Justice Meaza and Solomon as candidates for the House of People's Representatives (HPR), both of which have been approved by the House with no disagreement.

Following elections held on November 15, 2022, in New York, the 34th plenary assembly of the United Nations General Assembly recently nominated Solomon as a half-time judge of the United Nations Dispute Tribunal for the term 2023–2030.
