EU Foreign Policy Chief Borrell Advocates Humanitarian Pause

European Union Foreign Policy Chief Borrell

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has joined the chorus of voices calling for a halt to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

He stressed the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid to reach the Gaza Strip, where over two million people are facing dire circumstances.

On Monday, Borrell made a compelling case for a humanitarian pause in the Israel-Hamas conflict. He asserted that the top priority should be facilitating the inflow of humanitarian assistance into Gaza, which has been under siege for a prolonged period.

“Personally, I think a humanitarian pause is needed in order to allow the humanitarian support to come in and be distributed, seeing that half of the population of Gaza has been moving from their houses,” he told reporters before a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg.

Borell’s comment came as the EU calls for a pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas amid warnings of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Borrell's stance goes beyond just humanitarian aid. He emphasized that Hamas must cease its rocket attacks on Israel and release the more than 200 individuals who are reportedly held captive.

These actions, he believes, are crucial steps toward de-escalation.

Israel's intense bombardment of the enclave, coupled with a total blockade, is a response to Hamas's October 7 attacks, which Israeli officials claim resulted in the deaths of over 1,400 people, primarily civilians.

The conflict has also taken a devastating toll, with over 4,500 Palestinians, including many children and women, losing their lives in Israeli air raids, as reported by Palestinian authorities.
