Euro 2024: England begin search for elusive title, beat Serb

Jude Bellingham scored the decisive goal that made the difference Sunday night, as England beat Serbia 1-0 in Gelserkirshen, reports Allnews.ng.

Bellingham got the Three Lions off to a flying start in the 13th minute when he headed home from Bukayo Saka's cross.

Alexander Mitrovic went close to restoring parity five minutes later but his snap shot only found the side net.

Kyle Walker slid his low effort wide and out of play after a mazy run.

Bellingham was the target of some rash tackles from the Serbians as they seek to stop him from causing further damage.

John Stones who passed a late fitness test to make the starting lineup almost inadvertently let in an own goal as he sliced his clearance awkwardly handing to Serbians a corner kick.

That was, however, the last act in the first half as both set of players went down the tunnel for respective team talks.

With almost an hour played, the Serbians called for a VAR check as Mitrovic was bundled to the ground inside the England penalty box.

The referee felt the contact was not sufficient enough to award a spot kick.

Sergej Milinković-Savić was teed up by Dusan Tadic in the 65th minute but the Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia midfielder could not connect with the ball and the chance was lost.

Arsenal forward, Bukayo Saka, was replaced by Jarred Bowen with 11 minutes left on the clock.

Within a minute of that change, the English team almost doubled their lead as Harry Kane's header was pushed to the crossbar and out by Serbian keeper, Predrag Rajković.

The game petered away but the 1966 World Cup winners must be satisfied with how their night went.
