Euro 2024: Poles rue Lewandowski no-show for Dutch clash

Euro 2024: Poles rue Lewandowski no-show for Dutch clash

The first game in Group D of the tournament takes place on Sunday afternoon and Poland will be without former FIFA award winner, Robert Lewandowski against The Netherlands.

The Barcelona striker pulled up with a thigh injury in the Poles' last warmup friendly against Turkiye and has been ruled out of the game much to the relief of the Dutch defence led by Virgil van Dijk.

To make matters worse for Poland, the duo of Karol Swiderski and Pawel Dawidowicz are carrying knocks and are not 100% fit for the game.

The Dutch themselves had their injury issues but were quick to address them after Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners picked up injuries during the friendlies before the team travelled to Germany.

The players have been swiftly replaced by Ian Maatsen and Joshua Zirkzee albeit the absence of the metronomic Frenkie de Jong is sure to disrupt the 'oranje boys' somewhat.

The Dutch have won five of their last 6 matches against Poland in all competitions heading into this game.

However, Poland head into today's game unbeaten in eight games and will be buoyed by the pre-Euros wins over Ukraine and Turkiye.

This is a difficult match to call but the Dutch could find the cutting edge in attack to pull a narrow win.

Allnewsng's prediction: Poland 1-2 Netherlands.
