Euro 2024 Qualifiers: Ake, Depay Send Netherlands Past 10-Ma

Netherlands defender Nathan Ake scored twice and Memphis Depay also got on the scoresheet as the Dutch secured a hard-fought 3-0 home win over 10-man Gibraltar in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Monday.

Despite dominating possession and having 48 attempts on goal, the hosts were unable to find their rhythm in the first half, with Depay's 23rd-minute header the only breakthrough.

The visitors' goalkeeper Dayle Coleing's miscalculated timing in coming off his line allowed Depay to score after connecting with Denzel Dumfries’ cross.

However, Gibraltar put up a determined defense, with Koeman's side finding it hard to break them down.

After halftime, the Dutch coach made changes, bringing on Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malan to bolster the attack.

The substitutions paid off quickly, with Ake scoring his first goal in the 50th minute, with Dumfries again providing the assist.

A minute later, the visitors' Liam Walker received a red card for a studs-up tackle on debutant Mats Wieffer, handing the Dutch a one-man advantage.

Despite the numerical advantage, Gibraltar held on until the 82nd minute when Ake scored his second, with his shot taking a wicked deflection off John Sergeant.

The win comes after the Netherlands' disappointing 4-0 loss to France last week, with the Dutch now having three points in Group B.

France leads the group with six points from two games, while Greece is in second place with three points from one game.

The Dutch captain, Virgil van Dijk, acknowledged the team's sloppy performance, saying, "We'd hoped to try to destroy them but scored three goals when we actually should have scored a lot more.

"That is something we have to improve for the next period."

Despite the victory, the Dutch have work to do to ensure their place in the Euro 2024 tournament.
