Euro 2024 Qualifiers: McTominay Inspires Scotland Past Spain To Lead Group A

Euro 2024 Qualifiers: McTominay Inspires Scotland Past Spain

Scotland pulled off a shock win against Spain at Hampden Park on Tuesday, winning 2-0 to continue their perfect start to Euro 2024 qualifying.

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay, who had scored twice against Cyprus over the weekend, scored both goals for Scotland.

"The manager said this is our chance to create legacies as Scotland players and these are the nights in 20, 30 years that people remember," said McTominay. Steve Clarke's men sit at the top of Group A with maximum points from their opening two games.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente made eight changes from the side that defeated Norway 3-0 in his first match in charge on Saturday, including an entirely new defence.

McTominay struck the first goal for Scotland after just seven minutes, his shot deflecting off Inigo Martinez and past Kepa Arrizabalaga. Scotland was inches away from taking a 2-0 lead when Ryan Christie shot just wide.

Joselu, who earned his first international start by scoring twice against Norway on his debut cap, had his first big chance headed straight at Angus Gunn and then nodded powerfully against the bar from close range. De la Fuente tried to inspire a response from the Spanish team with the introductions of Dani Carvajal and Nico Williams in the second half.

However, Carvajal was at fault as Scotland scored their second goal, six minutes into the second half, when Kieran Tierney sped past Carvajal down the left, and McTominay swept home a fine finish on his weaker left foot.

Spain spent the final half-hour of the game in Scottish territory but couldn't create any clear-cut opportunities. A World Cup last-16 exit on penalties to Morocco, despite enjoying 77 percent possession in a 0-0 draw, cost Luis Enrique his job.

Despite a significant overhaul in personnel from De la Fuente, there was still no killer instinct from Spain. "We knew they'd have lots of the ball, and the manager said be clinical when we had the opportunities," added McTominay.
