Euro 2024: Romania thrash Eastern European neighbours Ukrain

Romania were imperious Monday afternoon against Ukraine in the 70,000 capacity Allianz Arena in Munich in their first victory at a European Championship in 24 years with a resounding 3-0 win in Group E.

Captain Nicolae Stanciu gave Romania the lead in the 29th minute with a stunning strike at the edge of the box.

Razvan Marin then doubled the Tricolours' lead eight minutes into the second half with a long-range effort as he pounced on a loose ball that squirmed under the arms of Ukraine and Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

Denis Dragus ensured victory was certain for Romania as he swept home the ball off Dennis Man's cross from close range.

Their only previous win at the Euros came in 2000 where a late Ionel Ganea penalty helped them beat England 3-2 in the group stage.

The game was remarkably the first competitive one in a major tournament for both sides albeit they had met in friendlies before now.

Ukraine's players are appearing in their first major tournament since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022.
