Euro 2024: Slovakia shock Belgium in Group E clash

Euro 2024: Slovakia shock Belgium in Group E clash

Belgium were handed a rude shock by Slovakia in their opening Group E game of the Euro 2024 tournament Monday evening, as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat in the hands of Austria.

Ivan Schranz were quickest to react on a loose pass by Manchester City's Jeremy Doku in the first half to give Slovakia a deserved 1-0 win.

Belgium, ranked third in the world, were presented with numerous scoring chances to redeem themselves but they failed to pounce on what came their way.

Matters were made worse for the Belgians as two Romelu Lukaku goals were disallowed by VAR.

Lukaku's suposed first goal was a legitimate call for offside but the second one was controversial as it seemed the Chelsea striker who is on loan to AS Roma was unjustly denied a good goal.

The game's referee, Halil Umut Meler, went to the monitor before his verdict that the goal should not stand, barely three minutes to the end of the game.
