Europa League: Juventus Gain First Leg Advantage Over Freibu

Angel Di Maria

Juventus showed experience to narrowly defeat newbies Freiburg in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16 tie with a 1-0 win.

Juve dominated the game with 20 shots while only allowing their German visitors a single shot. Though they only scored once, Juve could have easily scored more had they been more clinical.

This is the first time the Old Lady had won the first leg of a European knockout tie since the Champions League semifinal against Monaco in 2017.

The nerves were evident for Freiburg in the early moments, and the gulf in experience was evident throughout the game. Despite Sandro's injury forcing him to be replaced by Leonardo Bonucci, Juve still controlled the game, refusing to let Freiburg move the ball out of the midfield third.

Overall, a win is never a bad thing for Juventus, who are now heading to Germany for the second leg of the tie with a slender 1-0 lead.
