German Bundesliga champions-elect, Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday night set a new unbeaten record in European club football after claiming a 1-1 draw against English side West Ham United to progress 3-1 on aggregate to the Europa League semi-finals, reports Allnews.ng.

Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface came off the bench at the start of the second half in the 46th minute to replace Patrik Schik.

Xabi Alonso's enigmatic side over the weekend were crowned champions in Germany fo the firt time in thir history to break the 11-year stanglehold of Bayern Munich on the title.

Leverkusen had beaten the Hammers 2-0 in the first leg of their quaterfinals fixtures last week but David Moyes' team were a very much improved opponents at the London stadium and went in front in the 13th minute through Michail Antonio who headed home from a Jarrod Bowen cross.

West Ham were bossing the game but eventually ran of energy and handed the initiative to the Germn side as Jeremie Frimpong grabbed an 89th minute equaliser.

The semifinals berth means Leverkusen's hopes of going through the entire 2023-24 campaign without defeat remain intact as the unbeaten run  now extends to 44 games across all competitions.

They have garnered Thirty-eight victories and six draws with their latest draw setting a new record.

Leverkusen  new 44-game unbeaten streak is now the longest achieved by any club in Europe's top-five league, surpassing the previous record held by Serie A giants, Juventus, who had a 43-match unbeaten run between May 2011 and May 2012.

Leverkusen last suffered a defeat in May 2023 when they were beaten 3-0 by VfL Bochum in the Bundesliga on the final day of last season.
