El Shaarawy

AS Roma took a big step towards the Europa League quarterfinals with a comfortable 2-0 win against Real Sociedad in their first-leg clash on Thursday.

The Italian side will now travel to Spain with a strong advantage, hoping to secure their place in the next round.

The match started with both teams looking to take control, but it was Roma who struck first.

Stephan El Shaarawy found the back of the net from close range after a fine run and cross from Tammy Abraham, putting the hosts ahead in the Italian capital.

Real Sociedad tried to respond quickly, with Take Kubo striking the post, but they were unable to find an equalizer.

Roma continued to press forward and were rewarded towards the end of the match when Marash Kumbulla headed in a corner from Paulo Dybala to double their lead.

The win was a deserved one for Jose Mourinho's side, who were in control for much of the match and limited Real Sociedad's chances.

Roma will now be looking to build on their first-leg advantage when they travel to San Sebastian for the second leg next week.

In other Europa League action on Thursday, Bundesliga side Union Berlin snatched a dramatic 3-3 draw against Royale Union SG, while Bayer Leverkusen beat Ferencvaros 2-0 at home.

Meanwhile, in the UEFA Conference League, West Ham secured a 2-0 win against EK Larnaca thanks to two first-half goals from Michael Antonio, while Villarreal and Anderlecht played out a 1-1 draw.
