Europa title was reward, mum's struggle made me - Lookman

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has reflected on his brilliant performance on Wednesday night in the final of the UEFA Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen and insists the title was a reward for hardwork, reports Allnews.ng.

Lookman scored a hat-trick in the final in Dublin thereby becoming the first African to score a hat-trick in a major cup final and recalls how close he came to winning laurels of late but neer quite made it.

The Nigerian international Lookman was in the Super Eagles team that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations early this year but defeated by hosts Ivory Coast 2-1 in the final.

The former Fulham and Leiceter City forward only last week was in action as Atalanta lost in the final of the Coppa Italia to Juventus.

Atalanta's 3-0 win over Leverkusen was the first title by the team in 53 years.

"I lost in the Afcon and Coppa Italia finals. It hurt so much. "I don't have much to say. We are happy we won against Leverkusen. We won and it was reward for harwork," the Nigerian international gushed.

Lookman was asked afterwards if he could have imagined this growing up in Wandsworth and when he started out at Charlton's academy in the UK.

"Probably, yeah," he replied. "I've always had the confidence in my ability.

"In the past two years I've been able to take my game to a new level and show it on a more consistent basis.

"Maybe it could have come earlier but it's come now. I'm pleased with the progress I've made but this is just the beginning. I hope for more nights like this."

Lookman also praised the supportive role of his mother in his career which was rewarded Wednesday night as he scored all three goals in the 3-0 defeat over Xabi Alonso's strong side.

"My mum never once put pressure on me. I could see it was a struggle for my mum. She never showed me that."

She's the toughest characterI know.

"Seeing my mum struggle gave me extra fuel and fire. But that drive, that feeling of 'I can do this' it was love. I'm grteful for the struggles, it made me who I am today," Lookman noted.

Lookman's mother was in the stands to watch him shine for his Italian side and was seen having picturs together.
