European Weekend Football Roundup

European Weekend Football Roundup

Following another enthralling round of football action around Europe, football fans had varying thoughts to ruminate on about their team's prospects, with Liverpool definitely having the biggest victory of the week.

Liverpool mmoved16 points clear at the Premier League summit after Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah secured a deserved 2-0 victory over rivals Manchester United at Anfield

Earlier on Saturday, Crystal Palace snatched a 2-2 draw in a dramatic finale against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, where Sergio Aguero brought up another goalscoring landmark, going past the 250 goals mark.

Isaac Hayden snatched a last-gasp winner as Chelsea failed to make their dominance count in a dramatic 1-0 Premier League defeat to Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Heading into Saturday's fixture on the back of a 3-0 demolition of Burnley, Chelsea had almost 70 per cent of the possession, yet could not pick their way through Steve Bruce's well-drilled side and came unstuck in the final minute of stoppage time.

In London, Arsenal missed the chance to go level on points with Tottenham after John Fleck scored a late equaliser for Sheffield United in a 1-1 draw at Emirates Stadium.

Troy Deeney saw a penalty saved as Tottenham saw their Premier League winless run extend to four matches with an uninspiring 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road.

Jose Mourinho's men have suffered a significant drop in form in recent weeks, and now have just one win from their last six league games following a dour stalemate with Nigel Pearson's relegation-threatened side

In Germany, Erling Haaland scored with his first touch for Borussia Dortmund, before going on to complete a hat-trick, with the Norwegian striker stepping off the bench to help his team to a 5-3 comeback victory against Augsburg

Bayern Munich produced a much-improved second-half showing to overcome Hertha Berlin 4-0 at the Olympiastadion and climb into second place in the Bundesliga.

Hertha entered Sunday's game unbeaten in four matches, keeping a clean sheet in three of those, and they held firm until the hour mark on Sunday when Thomas Muller opened the scoring gates for the Bavarians

In Spain, Real Madrid moved three points clear of Barcelona at the top of LaLiga as Casemiro's double earned a hard-fought 2-1 win over Sevilla at Santiago Bernabeu. Meanwhile, title hopefuls Atletico Madrid lost to relegation-threatened Eibar to continue what has been a horrible start to the year for Diego Simeone.

Barcelona moved back to the top of the table after momentarily dropping to second following Madrid's win on Saturday, beating 10-man Granada at Camp Nou on Sunday in Quique Setien's first game in charge 1-0 win, courtesy of Lionel Messi

And in Italy, Inter were held for the second consecutive Serie A match as a 1-1 draw at Lecce handed reigning champions Juventus an unexpected boost in the title race with the Old Lady capitalising on their rival's hiccup, defeating Parma 2-1 to move back to the summit of the Italian Serie A.
