Ex-Minister Nebo Bemoans Continued Marginalisation Of Igbos In Nigeria

Ex-Minister Nebo Bemoans Continued Marginalisation Of Igbos

Former Minister of Power Professor Chinedu Nebo has bemoaned the marginalisation of the Southeast region by the Nigerian Government.

He warned that no section of Nigeria should be regarded as second class in the distribution of amenities and leadership positions.

Nebo made this during the World Peace Day organised by the Institute of Peace, Conflict and Development Studies (IPCDS) in Enugu.

While stressing on the theme of 2022 world Peace day, "End racism and build peace" Prof Nebo urged the Federal government led by President Muhammad Bihari to build on equity, fairness and justice to restore peace in the country.

"Today is world Peace day organised by the United Nations, UN.

"When we talk about peace, let us not forget that there is only one person that is called the Prince of Peace, that's our Lord Jesus Christ. Never forget that.

"But let me deal with the topic of today "End racism and build peace."

"We should remember that racism is a generic term used to divide discrimination in all form, whether it's nepotism, religion, social or economic.

"As we talk about peace today, anybody that promotes racism directly, indirectly, remotely or through our actions is advised to take a queue on what we learnt today and build peace.

"Let also remember that there can never be peace without justice, equity and fairness and that's what we are demanding from youNigerian government today.

"Nobody is a second class citizen in our country.

"That's why as we go into the 2023 election, we should bear this in mind," he said.

Also speaking the Director of IPCDS, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, (ESUT) Prof. Felix Asogwa said that the cause of insecurity in the Southeast today was as a result of discrimination and injustice which triggered the agitation by Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

He commended IPOB for their doggedness in fighting the cause for the zone but appealed for a more modern moderate way of agitating without using violence, stressing that nobody would remain to enjoy it if everybody should die fighting for it through violence.

"In respect to Southeast Nigeria, we all know that we are facing series of challenges arising from different level of discrimination.

"The major problems in Southeast today is about agitation by indigenous People of Biafra and the major cause of the agitation is discrimination against a certain people within the Nigerian region.

"Discrimination, especially the Igbo race and these people are crying let there be more acceptable political environment in Nigeria.

"Some people agree with that but also saying the methodology, unleashing of violence against the Igbo brothers and sisters.

"People are saying no that you have a genuine cause but the methodology must be located within an implore modern acceptable way.

"And to that extent, as the Director of an Institute preaching peace, advocating peace, researching peace and doing everything to ensure a more peaceful inter-cord, appealing to IPOB.

"We appreciate the work especially. Ndi-Igbo appreciate the cause they are fighting but saying that it must not be through the violent way.

"We are appealing to a return to more peaceful coexistence in Southeast.

"Without peace, we can't talk of development.

"Many inventors are migrating from the Southeast and if everybody should die in ensuring this through violence who will benefit?

"This is why we are calling for more moderation in terms of the level of violence characterising this struggle for Biafra freedom," he said.
