Examination: Lack Of Reading Culture, Others Cause Poor Perf

The Commissioner for Secondary Education in Delta, Rose Ezewu, has identified a lack of reading culture, negative influence, and dependence on examination malpractice among students as the causes of poor performance in various examinations.

Ezewu made this known on Friday while monitoring the ongoing 2021 West African School Certificate Examination (WAEC) in different parts of the state.

The commissioner said that there was need for stakeholders to play their roles in sanitizing the education system.

“I want to admonish the students to build a solid foundation for their future through seriousness in their academic activities,” she said.

According to her, the students have sufficient time to prepare for any examination.

While expressing satisfaction with the conduct of the examination, she said: “I urge the students across the state, especially those in public schools, to take advantage of Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa administration’s huge investment in the sector.

“The conducive teaching and learning environment provided by the Okowa-led administration has continued to be a reference point.”

The commissioner said that the essence of the monitoring was to ascertain the level of the conduct of the examination across the state.

Also, Augustine Oghoro, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, said there was need for students to redouble their commitments to studies in order to reap the benefits in the future.

Oghoro said the ministry would continue to embark on aggressive monitoring of the various examination centers in the state.
