EXCLUSIVE: How Super Eagles players rated against Benin Republic

EXCLUSIVE: How Super Eagles players rated against Benin Repu

The 2026 World Cup hopes for Nigeria is fast becoming bleak after Monday's defeat against Benin Republic. Allnews.ng here rates the performances of the players in the better-forgotten game in Abidjan.

The reason to go for Stanley Nwabali and not the in-form Maduka Okoye is understandable as he was first choice at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The Chippa United safehands was badly exposed by his defenders leading to the two goals he conceded. His distribution was, however, suspect. 4/10.

Bright Osayi-Samuel: The Fernabahce wing back was a willing outlet for the Eagles to find the crosses into the penalty box, but he did not deliver suficiently enough of that. Played at both left ad right full back positions. 5/10.

Calvin Bassey: The defending from Bassey against Benin Republic left much to be desired. The effort to stop Jodel Dossou from causing havoc was so lazy that the Beninoise had the freedom of Abidjan and expertly planted the ball beyon the reach of Nwabali. Arguably his worst game for Nigeria. 3/10.

Seyi Ajayii: West Brom defender, Ajayi was the better of the two central defenders, but he was not spectacular either. Struggled with the pace of the opposition forwards but made some timely clearances. 5/10.

Benjamin Tamimi: The Ihefu FC of Tanzania defender was shunted to the right back place before he later moved to central defence. Still getting into the system in the Eagles. 5/10.

Wilfred Ndidi: The stand-in captain was all over the places, Monday eveing, and could not cope with the trickery and turn of pace of the nippy Benin Republic stars. Subbed off in the second half as he could not steer the team out of trouble on Monday. 4/10.

Raphael Onyedika: Easily was a contender for the Man-of-the-Match award, although Samuel Chukwueze has something to say about it. Scored a brilliant goal which was sadly rendered ineffective. 7/10.

Alex Iwobi: The Fulham forward performed better in the 1-1 game against South Africa, but Finidi George should not have subbed him off as it limited the creativity of the team, when Victor Boniface came into the game. 5.5/10.

Ademola Lookma: Full of running and good movemetns but some of his attempts at goal were disappointing. 6/10.

Terem Moffi: The OGC forward failed to justify why he deserved to start the game over Victor Boniface. Lacked the bite or presence to trouble the Benin defenders. 4/10.

Samuel Chukwueze: The AC Milan forward put up another great performance for the Super Eagles. He assisted Onyedika's goal and found Lookman with a pinpoint header in the opposition box in the second half. Lively, just as he was against South Africa.

The Subs

Victor Boniface: Proved to be an aerial threat for the Beninoise defenders and could have done so much for the team, if he had started the game. 4/10.

Paul Onuachi: Came on at the same time as Boniface and was lively too. He dropped deep to pick up the ball and feed Boniface. 4/10.

Alhassan Yusuf: Brought rather too late in the game but was assured, nonetheless. 3/10.
