Expert Says Healthy Diet Key To Fighting Diabetes

Abiola Oniyitan, a dietician at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Ogun State, has described a healthy diet as an essential factor in managing diabetes.

Oniyitan said this at a one-day free medical screening programme and diabetes management seminar organised by the Talabi Diabetes Centre, Isara-Remo, Remo North local government area of Ogun State, themed; “Education to protect tomorrow."

“Diet plays an important role in the management of diabetes, that’s why we have to ensure that we are well-informed in order to avoid any further complications.

“A lot of people eat anyhow; we don’t even take into cognizance, what we are to eat and what not to eat.

“There are some foods that elevate blood sugar. Dieting is very vital because if we are able to curtail what we consume, it will prevent us from other complications of Diabetes.”

She advised the public to equally prioritise medical check-ups rather than self-medication to keep fit and know their health status.

“Constant medical check-up is very important because from there you will be able to follow up with your health status.”
