FACT CHECK: Did DSS Invite Commodore Kunle Olawunmi?

An Instagram post on Tuesday by popular Nigerian musician, Eedris Abdulkareem reads: "NewsNow: Retired Commodore Kungle Olawuni honours DSS invitation in company of his lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN)..."

As of the time of publishing this report, the post has garnered over 2,000 likes, and dozens of comments.

But is it the Department of State Services (DSS) that invited Cdre Olawunmi, AllNews check.

DIA -- not DSS...

The Military Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) invited Cdre Olawunmi over his Channels TV's anti-Buhari interview last week.

Olawunmi honoured the invitation on Tuesday in the company of his lawyers. Femi Falana (Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN), who is part of Olawunmi's legal team was present.

The DIA is diffferent from the DSS. DIA is the primary military intelligence agency of Nigeria, while the DSS is Nigeria's secret police.

Verdict

Claim by Abdulkareem - unintentional or otherwise - that Cdre Olawunmi honoured DSS invitation on Tuesday 31 August 2021 is misleading. DSS is not involved in the matter; it is the DIA.
